February and March 2010 Projects

With the previous silly post out of the way, it’s on to actual business. Like the reasons you actually check this site, whether you’ve been here one time or many times.

What the freakin’ heck is that geek up to, anyway?

Well, I’ll tell you.

Final Fantasy 1 GBA Hacking notes

Check out the current iteration of the FF1 GBA hacking notes

There’s a lot to these notes, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to post them. I will likely end up installing another iteration of my CMS in order to break down the size of individual pages. Besides just text considerations, which I have already posted, I will have sections on

  • Character class information… Starting stats, level ups, and characters in emulator memory
  • The spell table, the Character spell ability table, and the Monster Ability table
  • The weapons, armor, and item tables
  • The shop list and inn prices
  • The bestiary and monster AI information
  • Battle record information and Regional information directing the battles you face
  • Some little code hacking tidbits that I recorded as I went (please note, I did not document every change to the ROM code that I made)

Version 1.2 of Final Fantasy 1: Mod of Balance

If you think the Mod of Balance was too easy, or if it’s just getting a little boring, try this version out! It is in the playtesting phase, but expect it to show up in the next couple of weeks. I’m excited to get this out to you all. It features a number of fresh changes, including revamped shops (again), slightly rebalanced items, many different battle configurations, different abilities for various monsters, as well as a few bugfixes. This version won’t be for those who are both easily frustrated and don’t allow themselves the luxury of savestates. I’m just sayin’.

Breath of Fire 2 — Ludmeister’s Remix

I found myself blown away with a masterful translation of the SNES classic, Breath of Fire 2. In its original state, Capcom really did a hack job on the script, and I had no idea how great the plot of the story really was. Their translation got me interested enough in Breath of Fire 2 that I worked with the ROM and created my own re-balancing hack based off of the Retranslation by RyuSui and d4s. Also to be released shortly, the main features of this mod are:

  • Reworked characters (I gave some of the characters slightly different spells and attributes. Jean, Aspara, Nina, and Sten in particular should be more useful now.)
  • A few item tweaks
  • Spells generally cost less AP to cast
  • Monsters are made tougher to keep the challenge intact
  • New Shaman Combinations. I won’t spoil the combos just yet, but if you, like me, weren’t satisfied with the original’s Shaman combination system, try this mod out!
